Little Blessings

So last night was another slow night at the restaurant. I'm not sure if it's the play that was going on at the Averitt Center or the weather but it was a slow Friday for the second week in a row. Anyway due to to fact that it was slow I was expecting morning prep to be quick and easy this morning. At ten till ten as I was leaving the house Gary texted me and told me not to come in that there wasn't enough for both of us to do. So I get the morning off!!! What am I going to do with my morning off? Read, sleep (didn't sleep well last night), hit up Hobby Lobby or Books-A-Million...the possiblibilites are endless. Yay for litte unexpected blessings!!!!

And Six Months Later...

...I finally have my official chef coats. I was told last week that they had been sent to the embroiderer and I asked if they had my last name right (most people leave the H out). It was a good thing I asked because they had already done two without the correct spelling. I'll have to wait for the first two to be taken out and redone. At least they won't have to fix all 4!!

Trip To The City

I had the day off yesterday and Charlotte has only one child this week so we decided to take a quick trip to Savannah. It was a lot of fun to get out of Statesboro for a few hours and shop a little.

Little Roeland after he ate his blue lolly pop...

We, of course, had to stop by The Fresh Market

A few of my purchases

Can't wait to try this beer!

Awesome Salsa

I found this salsa at Bi-Lo last week and it is amazing!! I ate a whole jar in less than a week...yeah I love salsa and chips.

Valentines Cookies

Last week Brandy and I went to Target in Augusta and found some really cute Valentines sprinkles. I decided to make sugar cookies with Bronwynne and Anice yesterday. They turned out really well and the girls had a lot of fun decorating them. The recipe I use is below; it's the best one I've found so far. You can eleminate the crushed peppermint and substitute the peppermint extract for another flavoring. I used a little lemon flavoring for my glaze this time.

The battery in my camera died so I didn't get any pictures of the finished cookies after the girls were done. :(

Old Fashioned Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter (room temperature)
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Cream shortening and butter together. Add sugar, egg and vanilla. Mix thoroughly. Mix sifted flour and salt together. Add flour and salt to egg mixture. Mix well. Cover bowl of dough with foil and refrigerate until chilled (at least 30 minutes). Using rolling pin, roll our dough to 1/4" thick on a flour surface. Dip cookie cutter into flour and "cut out" cookies. Place cookies on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 11-15 minutes depending on how brown you prefer cookies. Remove with a spatula while still warm. Allow to cool. Decorate with Pepperming Glaze.

Peppermint Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
2-3 tablespoons milk
1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 drop red food coloring
1/2 cup crushed pepperming candy

Combine all ingredients. Mix well. Drizzle over cooled cookies.

Finger Update

I keep getting the "how's the finger" question so...here it is. What I cut off has grown back except for the nail.

Tuesday Morning Baking

So I started last Tuesday going to the restaurant and baking in the mornings. Today I got up and was at the restaurant by 8. I made cranberry/apple bread pudding which turned out really well. I had a hard time not make myself a bowl full. One of the other desserts that we sell a ton of is our blondies. We ran out twice last week so I wanted to make sure I wasn't having to make extra during the week again. I love to going in a bake and it's nice because no one else is usually there so it's nice and quite.

Mixers make things sooo much easier and faster
